Seven Key Pointers in Kid Safety

Safety First

Seven key pointers in keeping your kid(s) safe

  1. Stranger Danger: Emphasize the importance of being cautious around unfamiliar people and the difference between safe adults (like teachers) and strangers.
  2. Establish a Family Codeword: Choose a unique word or phrase that is easy to remember, and ensure all family members and friends understand its significance. This codeword can be used in situations where your Kid is being approached by an unfamiliar person. If this person does not know the codeword, then they know not to engage in communications with that person and to immediately go to a safe place.
  3. Know Safe Places and Trusted Adults: Teach your Kids about safe places in their community and safe routes home, such as police stations, fire stations, or stores where they can seek help if needed. Also, help them identify trusted adults they can turn to if they feel uncomfortable. Identify well-lit paths where they frequent.
  4. Stay at a Safe Distance: Instruct your Kids to maintain a safe physical distance from strangers. If someone they don't know approaches, they should keep a comfortable space and avoid getting too close.
  5. Use the Buddy System: Encourage your Kids to stick together with friends or siblings when out and about, at bus stops, and in public restrooms. There's safety in numbers, and strangers are less likely to approach a group.
  6. Empower Your Kids to Say "No" Assertively if a Stranger Tries to Engage With Them: Make sure they understand that it's okay to be firm and refuse any requests or offers from unfamiliar individuals.
  7. Internet safety: Educate them about online risks, set age-appropriate restrictions, and encourage open communication about their online activities,

Regularly reinforce these tips through open communication and role-playing scenarios to help your Kids feel confident in handling unexpected encounters with strangers.
